When we first introduced these water bottles, we had been asked multiple times if a metal water bottle would leach heavy metals into our drinking water. This is a valid concern and an interesting potential problem to look into. So, we immediately devised a plan to test if any heavy metal leaching was occurring:
The reason we chose type 1 ultrapure water is two-fold. The first reason is that it introduces the least amount of variables. Normal tap water, for example, may already contain a detectable level of heavy metals which could skew our results. Type 1 ultrapure water on the other hand is entirely devoid of heavy metals and minerals, so it is the preferred type of water to use here to get the most accurate results. The second reason for using type 1 ultrapure water is that it is quite corrosive and thus is the best water to use for attempting to leach heavy metals out of a metal water bottle. If type 1 Ultrapure water can’t leach heavy metals out of the water bottle, then pretty much nothing drinkable can.
So, what were the results? Absolutely nothing! Even after a full three months (that’s more than 2000 hours!) we weren’t able to leach any heavy metals out of the water bottle. We really tried hard too, and this would not be representative of a normal use scenario as nobody should be drinking type 1 ultrapure water. Even if you did (again, don’t do this!), you still wouldn’t have any issues with heavy metals. So go ahead and fill that bottle up with some crisp cold water and head out on an adventure!

Over the years, I've had many water bottles, most of them awful. Plastic water bottles are simply unreliable in quality, metal water bottles get an awful metallic taste that I assume isn't doing me any cognitive favors. This water bottle has been reliable, looks better than depicted, and I hope will be a great relic to my future self from my bio hacking days.
