Prevent water and bacteria from entering the ear canal and reduce the chance of ‘swimmer’s ear’ with our pick of the best ear plugs – and alternatives for those who don’t like to wear ear plugs

SURFEARS 4.0

£54.95

Pro: Doesn’t block sound
Con: Pricy but built to last

We loved the new SurfEars 4.0 ear plugs! Designed for surfers, they’re built to last. In the pool, they felt soft and exceptionally comfortable. Designed to keep water out while allowing sound in, we could still hear our coach. Most importantly for open water, they’re on an adjustable wire so you won’t lose them. They’re also made from recycled ocean plastics and repurposed silicone, and come in a nifty case, with ventilation holes, a magnetic snap closure and carabiner. JT

HAPPY EARS Ocean Plastics Discovery Pack

£26.50

Pro: Pro: Made from ocean plastics
Con: Tiny case, might be easy to lose

The earplug business is a dirty business; more than 1 billion single-use ear plugs are thrown away every year. Happy Ears are the first eco-friendly earplugs made of ocean plastics. The ear plugs come in three sizes; the Ocean Plastics Discovery Pack lets you to try all three. The plugs have a neat design: a soft oval part with a short stem designed to replicate the inner ear canal. They’re tiny, but they stayed put during our swim, kept water out and felt comfortable. They also soften with wear, are washable and durable, so should last well. JT

EARVOLUTION Putty Buddies Floating Ear Plugs

Pro: One size fits all
Con: Block sound as well as water
Putty Buddies are made of soft and moldable silicone. After working the putty a little, you flatten it over the ear opening to create a water- and sound-proof barrier. They were the most effective in blocking water and sound although, personally, we prefer to be able to hear a little. We liked the fluorescent colours, which would be easy to spot if they did fall out. Although, wearing them with the Ear Band-It ULTRA headband, a soft neoprene headband shaped to cover the ears, they weren’t going anywhere.

ORCA Neoprene Headband, £14

£14

Pro: Good solution if you don’t like ear plugs
Con: Doesn’t keep 100% of the water out

Super stretchy and comfortable, this 2.5mm neoprene headband covers the ears really well, protecting them from cold water and keeping ear plugs in place. A Velcro strap at the back allows you to adjust it for the perfect fit. They also worked well for those of us who feel dizzy swimming in cold water but don’t like wearing ear plugs. Whether it was because the tight-fitting headband kept most of the water out or because it warmed the water up, we found it had a noticeable effect on reducing dizziness in open water.

What’s the best sunscreen for outdoor swimmers? We put ten sun lotions, mineral sunscreens and zinc sun sticks to the test

GREEN PEOPLE Mineral Sports+ SPF30 Sun Cream

£30

They say: Conquering your next run, diving into the waves or enjoying the thrill of horse riding? If you’re spectating or participating in outside sport, this mineral SPF is the one for you. Rich in ray-reflecting Zinc Oxide that offers high-factor defence against UVA and UVB sunlight, this sports sun cream is great for all skin types. There’s no need to wait about for your sun filters to absorb, this SPF protects from the moment you apply it! Did we mention it’s reef-safe, water repellent and has great staying power too, perfect for swimming and water sports.

We say: This was a dream to apply and smelt amazing. We wore it on an hour-long sea swim and it left our skin feeling moisturised and smooth. Knowing it’s ocean-safe is important for us swimmers as we want to protect the water we swim in. It also didn’t clog the skin, meaning our tester didn’t break out in the usual heat bumps. The light, non-greasy formula means it’s ideal for the face and can be worn daily.

STREAM2SEA Every Day Sunscreen SPF 45

£25.95

This is a 100% mineral sunscreen, so you can wear this in protected waters where sunscreen is banned, like Hawaii. I really liked the feel on the skin, not claggy or greasy. Like many mineral creams, it does leave a slight white sheen on the skin, but it is a great protection and perfect for swimming. Apply before heading outside for best results.

LIFEJACKET Sun Protection Spray SPF50

£24

They say: A quick-dry and water resistant SPF 50+ sun protection spray for body, face and scalp. Originally designed for people with thinning or bald heads, the fluid get straights to your scalp, dries quickly and doesn’t leave any residue or whiteness. No hassle, no stinging eyes and no stickiness, the quick-dry oil spreads easily, glides onto the skin, absorbs quickly and doesn’t get stuck in hair. Perfect before a long period of sun exposure or if going out on the water because it doesn’t come off easily giving you strong protection no matter how hard you push it.

We say: This is a lovely light oil that does as exactly as promised, spreads easily and is quickly absorbed. The fact that it isn’t sticky meant our hands were free to adjust goggles and tow float on our river swim. We also tested the hair application, which works as well as it claims without being oily. The only thing we didn’t like was the direct spray style, more of a squirt than a mist-style spray.

SHADE All-Natural Sunscreen SPF25

£12.75

They say: Award winning product Shade All-Natural Sunscreen is an effective, natural mineral sunscreen. With only 4 ingredients to moisturise and protect skin from the broadest spectrum of damaging UVA and UVB rays, Shade has been developed to keep your skin naturally healthy whilst blocking rays that can burn and cause sun damage. Suitable for all skin types and all ages.

We say: We were intrigued by this mineral-based sunscreen, which contains only four ingredients – shea butter, coconut oil, zinc oxide and bees wax – yet promises to offer SPF25 protection and reflect 96% of harmful sun rays. The solid block, which comes in a metal tin, smells like coconut sweets and is easy to apply, leaving a matt sheen. Unlike other sunscreens we tried it’s not tested for water resistance, so while the high level of oil and wax means it stays on your skin in water, you need to reapply generously afterwards. It also doesn’t degrade neoprene!

PELOTAN SPF 30 Spray + 50ml Roll On

£30

They say: Pelotan is high-performance sun protection designed specifically to improve performance, maximise comfort and allow athletes to spend more time doing what they love without risking skin damage. Designed for use by athletes, it has been laboratory tested as lasting up to 8 hours at SPF 30, even with sweat. It is engineered for use in sports where the skin’s ability to breathe and sweat effectively is absolutely paramount. Pelotan’s unique formula binds with the skin without blocking pores, meaning your body can effectively regulate temperature.

We say: We tried Pelotan SPF 30 Spray and Roll On. Both are easy to apply and have a light coconut scent. Unlike some sun creams, it rubs in quickly and doesn’t leave the skin feeling greasy. We tested it before a run on a hot day. If we weren’t paying attention because of the test, we would have forgotten we had any on. Sweating was normal. It’s a good choice for long swims and multisport. We will definitely use it for our next swimrun event.

ORGANII SPF 50 Sun Milk

£27.95

They say: The perfect sun protection for the whole family. Our certified organic SPF 50, fragrance free, mineral Sun Milk is suitable for babies, children and adults and will protect the most delicate skin from the harsh sun rays. It blends effortlessly and is quickly absorbed, leaving more time for fun in the sun. The high-protection formula has a fluid consistency so there is no residue left on the skin after application, while protecting your skin from the UVA & UVB rays naturally and safely. Non-nano Zinc Oxide and non-nano Titanium Dioxide sit on top of the skin, reflecting the Sun’s rays and creating a protective barrier.

We say: As you might expect from a SPF 50 mineral sunscreen, the Organic Sun Milk applies thickly and leaves a white cast on your skin initially, but it soon absorbs and we were surprised to discover that our skin felt soft rather than sticky. In fact, it did seem to have a lasting moisturising effect, thanks to the nourishing natural oils, which we felt grateful for after a lido swim. Although it’s pricey, you only need to use a small amount on your skin.

SUNTRIBE Zinc Sun Stick

£16.31

They say: An all natural zinc sunscreen that stays on in both big waves and sweaty activities on land. Doesn’t contain any questionable ingredients and free from chemicals that harm coral reefs, it also won’t cause a mess on your fingers or sting if it gets in the eyes. Made with Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, this reef safe sports sunscreen creates a protective shield on top of your skin from the first moment of application. Unparalleled water resistance and high performance functionality loved by professional athletes and everyday adventurers.

We say: This water resistant and sweat resistant Zinc Sun Stick is a push-up stick, that you can apply to key areas of your face that might get sun damage while in the water such as the nose, cheeks, ears and lips. It comes in five colours, which show on your skin rather than being absorbed. We tested the ‘mud tint’, which is a discrete brown tone that blends in with your natural skin tones. Easy to apply, it didn’t leave us with sticky hands to smear on our goggles and the precise application meant it was one of the only sunscreens tested that didn’t cause issues for nose clip wearers.

THE INTREPID EXPLORER Travel Size Sunscreen SPF 50

£16.99

They say: Embark on sun-soaked escapades with our SPF 50 Moisturising Sunscreen. Our special broad spectrum cream formula not only protects you from the sun, but keeps your skin nourished. Designed for maximum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Good for the whole family including sensitive skin. The Travel Size (60ml) is practical and lightweight and ideal for cyclists, campers, climbers and other intrepid explorers, weekend adventurers and daring day trippers who need a natural hair and body wash but need to travel light.

We say: Although still offering a SPF 50 protection, The Intrepid Explorer Sunscreen had thinner consistency to other liquid sunscreens on test, which meant that it rubbed in instantly and had a barely-there feel. Without having to check with friends if you still had a white layer sitting on your skin, this sunscreen felt much quicker to apply and left less of a sheen. Our skin felt soft and moisturised and we weren’t left feeling sticky.

SEVENTY ONE The Invisible Face Sun Stick SPF50

£17.90

They say: At SeventyOne Percent, we are proud to offer you natural and environmentally friendly sunscreen products. We use natural ingredients such as karanja oil, shea butter and coconut oil to protect your skin against harmful UV rays. The Invisible Face Sun Stick SPF50 is high invisible sun protection for outdoor enthusiasts. It has an ocean-friendly eco formula developed and tested, is very resistant to water and perspiration and has an invisible and non-sticky texture.

We say: This handy sun stick is super easy to apply – especially on young children as you don’t need to rub it in – doesn’t feel sticky and is immediately transparent. It’s ideal for applying to sensitive areas such as the face, lips, shoulders and scars and is very water resistant. It also smells delicious and has a moisturising effect thanks to the mango butter, jojoba and mimosa wax. We liked its convenient size, which fits easily in a pocket.

GREEN PEOPLE SPF15 Sun Cream with Natural Insect Repellent

£30

They say: Demand more from your sun care when you choose this dual-action certified organic sun cream with natural insect repellent. Designed to ‘do it all’, SPF15 shields against sun damage while DEET-free Citrepel 75 provides PMD-powered protection against mosquitoes, midges and more for up to 4 hours. And that’s with just one application! Non-whitening, non-nano SPF15 Zinc Oxide provides medium mineral sun protection against UVA and UVB rays. Perfect for early starts and evening strolls!

We say: Insects can be a nightmare beside the water in summer, so we were excited to test this on a hot day in Finland. While the product isn’t water resistant (you will need to apply after your swim) it was ideal for before and after. Not only is it moisturising and leaves skin smelling fresh, it also kept biting insects at bay with its DEET-free formula. Ideal for kids, as you don’t have to apply lotions twice.

Looking for durable swimming kit that’s made with recycled or surplus materials, without compromising on performance? Look no further!

CORCAMAR Pull Buoy and Kick Board

£50

Pro: Strong environmental credentials
Con: Extra weight and longer to dry

I immediately loved the aesthetic and idea behind Corcamar’s pull buoy and kick-board. These two basic tools are staples of almost every pool swimmer’s kit bag and are usually made of polyethylene foam. This is cheap, lightweight and durable, but can take centuries to break down in landfill or fragment into microplastics. Cork is both sustainable and biodegradable. But how does it compare in use? Cork can be two to three (or more) times denser than polyethylene foam, and I immediately felt this. They are noticeably heavier and provide less floatation. However, this is not necessarily a disadvantage as it holds your arms and legs closer to their natural swimming position. They also feel better against your skin. I particularly liked the smooth finish on the pull buoy. The kick-board has a rougher surface and I lost a few cork crumbs while swimming. SG

PASSENGER Drifter NetPlus® Swim Lined Short

£44.95

Pro: Can be worn as regular shorts
Con: Not for speedy swimming

Never one to pass by a contour inspired print, I was delighted to try these new swim shorts by Passenger. They’re made from NetPlus, which is created from recycled fishing nets sourced directly from the fishermen before the nets reach the end of their useful life and end up in our oceans. Made with firm, well-structured fabric and 18” in length, the Drifter shorts can double up as regular shorts, so they’re great for travelling light. While they won’t win any awards for speed in a training session, they’re great for outdoor dips as they’re robust and quick-drying. SC

DAVY J The Zero Trace Swimsuit

£120

Pro: Exceptionally flattering fit
Con: Might not wear a scoop back for a long training session

While many brands use recycled materials, it’s rare to find a fully biodegradable swimsuit! The Zero Trace Swimsuit is a great blend of active fit and leisure style. We loved the high front and racer-cut neckline, while the compressive fabric didn’t budge during a training session. The scoop back was fairly high, which meant we didn’t fear the straps slipping and the medium-high leg combined with full coverage on the bum was a perfect combination. JT

FINISTERRE From Wetsuits Recycled Changing Mat

£65

Pro: Made with surplus wetsuit material
Con: Heavy and doesn’t fold up small

In 2022, Finisterre collected over 1,000 used wetsuits from their community, with an aim to give them new life. Working with their friends at Circular Flow, this thick padded mat made with recycled wetsuits, is the first product to come out of the collaboration. Designed to protect your wetsuit when you’re getting changed on rough hard ground, the changing mat then turns into a bag to carry your wet gear thanks to a sturdy draw cord. This is not a lightweight, easy to pack away kind of a changing mat. It’s generously sized, robust and built to last. If you drive to your swim spot and have space to hang it at home, it’ll last you for years. JT

NUOCEANS Sandals

£85

Pro: Exceptionally comfortable
Con: Not the lightest sandals

With their distinctive colourful midsole made from discarded flip-flops that wash up on Southeast Asia’s beaches, there’s no mistaking these sandals. And that’s kind of the point – this contrast confetti-like layer is as much a statement as it is a style choice, a chance for the brand to shake things up and drive change. A slip-on style that’s ideal to take you to the water’s edge but not actually wear in the water, the sandals were comfortable from the moment I slipped them on thanks to the recycled cork footbed with its cushioned foam layer. The straps are easy to adjust and made with a recycled vegan leather-look material. JT

ZONE3 OWS Renew Long Sleeve Swimsuit

£70

Pro: UPF 50+ sun protection
Con: Bit of a wriggle to take off

As fans of Zone3’s sustainable OWS Renew range, I was excited to try out this new and updated long sleeve swimsuit, featuring an abstract contour-inspired pattern on the sleeves with a pop of vivid orange for visibility. It’s crafted with Eco-Friendly Xfinity Renew Fabric, which is made from recycled polyester yarn. Although it’s slightly less flexible than some swimwear fabrics, this updated design has a more generous fit than last year’s range; it was true to size and fit like a glove. The flatlock seams meant that it didn’t chafe even on longer swims, too. It’s lightweight and incredibly fast drying which, together with the UPF 50+ protection, makes it ideal for travelling and summer swims. It also has an extended size range (size 8-20). JT

ZOGGS Extender Mid Jammer

£38

Pro: Long lasting and made from recycled materials
Con: Muted colours

Buy these jammers for their durability. I’ve got a similar pair of Zoggs jammers made with an older version of their Ecolast fabric from before the pandemic and they’re still going strong despite weekly use. The new version, made with Ecolast+ (made from recycled plastic bottles) comes with a lifetime guarantee. I happily use these for training and river swimming. They’re comfortable, fit well with a drawstring waist and are sleek through the water. They’re also 100% chlorine proof, so shouldn’t fade or degrade with use. The only downsides for me are the dark colours and subtle design. I’d prefer something brighter but that’s obviously a personal preference. SG

SEASHELL Organic Heavyweight Socks

£15

Pro: Super stretchy and breathable
Con: None

Considering how thick and snug these 100% organic cotton socks feel, they are remarkably breathable. Allowing air to flow through the fabric, they kept my feet comfortable whatever the weather. And I certainly put them through their paces, wearing them to the gym, when travelling in baking temperatures and pulling them onto damp feet after cold lake dips. They felt warming after a cold swim, but still breathable enough for warm weather. Plus they’re really stretchy, which makes them easy to pull on with cold hands. Plus, they wash well and I loved the vibrant ocean inspired pattern. I can’t fault them. JT

RED Women’s Long Sleeve Changing Robe Alter Evo

£159.95

Pro: Ultimate protection from the cold, rain and wind
Con: The wrists cuffs are quite snug

A changing robe is a proper investment. It’s likely to be one of you most well used pieces of kit, so you want to buy wisely. We’ve tested a lot of changing robes, and the Alter Evo range – which comes in a range of eight block colours made from recycled polyester plus one style made from surplus material – feels like a hug. Wearing it post-swim feels comforting, reassuring and protective. We didn’t want to take it off. Its peaked hood fits over your bobble hat and keeps the wind and rain off your face. It has great pockets, a two-way zip with a storm flap, and a ridiculously cosy fleece lining. Finally, this robe is made to last. It’s washable at 30C and, with proper care, it should continue to be your fave piece of swimming gear for decades. RC

A plant-based protein shake formulated specifically for women, a backpack that doubles as a tow float and a fully immersible sling bag: read on for our round up of the best pieces of outdoor swimming kit we’ve tried, tested and loved this summer

XTRATUF Aqua Apres Fish Sliders

£45

These are super simple, super comfortable and super useful. The high performance EVA foam footbed makes it feel like you are walking on air and they weigh virtually nothing, which means they are great for throwing into kit bags or wearing to and from the water. Even cooler, for every pair sold XTRATUF will donate £1 to the RNLI.

ATTIS Kit Bags, from £17.75

£17.75

Sustainable camping brand Attis make two- and three-berth tents using organic cotton and recycled ocean plastic. Their Kit Bags are produced from the same high tensile organic cotton as their ridge tents, with zips and labels made from recycled ocean plastic. Perfect for keeping your bits organised and easy to find even with cold hands.

BUDDYSWIM Buoy Drybag BuddySwim Backpack

£42

As fans of summer swim-hiking, we love any kit that enables adventure. This clever backpack doubles as a tow float. Super comfortable to carry and sizeable enough for your swim kit, it has fully adjustable straps and a breathable pad that sits against your back. The backpack trellis is easy to clip off so you can inflate it and keep your essentials with you while you swim.

HARBOUR & TIDE Buoys Buoys Buoys T-Shirt

£30

We love these cheeky slogan t-shirts by from Harbour & Tide, a vibrant beach store in sunny Margate. Made with 100% organic cotton and hand-printed in Hastings, these limited edition designs (which also include ‘Resting Beach Face’), won’t be around for long!

PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PF60 Chew Bar, £9.99 (three bars)

£9.99

Sick of gels but need some quick carbs? These Chew Bars from Precision Fuel & Hydration could be the solution. The Chew Bar has a consistency not dissimilar to Turkish Delight and packs 60g of carbs into a bar weighing 68g. They’re intended to fuel strenuous endurance efforts, such as long bike rides or swims. However, chewing while swimming is challenging. We use them instead as a pre-swim energy boost, washed down with coffee. They also work well for an energy recharge between swims if you’re doing multiple sessions in a day, such as at a training camp. They’re not as quick to get down as a gels, but more satisfying.

TRIHARD After-Swim Body Wash

£14.27

We regularly use TriHard’s Hair Comb-O to remove chlorine and saltwater and relieve irritation caused by pool chemicals, but this summer we’ve also been hooked on their After-Swim Body Wash, which has gentle exfoliating kernels to softly relieve skin discomfort while neutralising chlorine and hydrating the skin. It leaves our skin feeling so refreshed and clean!

COLUMBIA KONOS™ TRS Outdry

£110

The design of this lightweight waterproof hiking shoe is inspired by the shape of a pinecone, the midsole cradling the heel for comfortable stability, the heel and forefoot cushioning impact while the outsole provides exceptional traction in wet and dry conditions. They’re ideal for travelling and swim hikes!

CRAZY CREEK Hex 2.0 LongBack Chair

£79.95

This is such a clever idea and our non-swimmer pal appreciated it the most! While we were in the water, they happily sat riverside, comfortable and supported. It is so light and easy to carry clipped onto a backpack, perfect for picnics, camping and enjoying a moment with a hot drink after a cool swim.

DECATHLON Swimsuits

£17.99-£24.99

The new summer range of versatile suits from Decathlon are affordable, comfortable and will work in the pool or open water. The simplicity of these suits is what makes them brilliant. They could be worn under a wetsuit, while sunbathing or on a longer swim. They might not be ideal for longer bodies, but the colours, fabric and styles are ideal for most swimmers. The Lio one-piece is perfect in open water.

FINISTERRE Kaia 2mm Yulex® Swimsuit

£140

We love Finisterre’s new Kaia thermal swimsuit. Made with Yulex® 2.0 – the new, stretchier iteration of the plant-based alternative to neoprene – with flatlocked and zigzag stitched seams prevent it from slipping, it will keep you supported and toasty year-round. Plus, that print is everything!

GROUNDTRUTH Cross Body Dry Sling

£73

Super simple and fully immersible, this waterproof sling bag is ideal for small items like a car key, mobile phone or medication while out on the water. We tested it wearing while swimming, as well as fully submerging and it was perfect. We wore it like a bum bag while swimming and it didn’t hinder our stroke, so when a tow float isn’t needed, this will be a go-to piece of kit. Also great for water paddle sports, worn as a sling bag.

JARVI the Sauna Bottle

£24.95

Not just for sauna lovers! The natural cork and neoprene sleeve on this stylish Sauna Bottle (550ml or 1lt) keeps the double-walled insulated stainless steel bottle cool to touch and the water chilled even in a 90ºC sauna. It’s also great for keeping your water refreshingly cool during a training session in a too-warm pool.

LAND&WATER Face Moisturiser, Hydrate & Restore

£32

This rich moisturiser is made with samphire, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, all of which can benefit dry, post-swim skin by deeply hydrating and replenishing moisture, which is often lost due to the effects of swimming in chlorinated or salt water. It smells lovely, too!

LOVE LISSIE Leopard Print Leggings

£32.99

These super soft, high waisted leggings are supportive, durable and brilliantly comfortable. They are great for both running and yoga sessions, as well as being easy enough to slip on after a swim. Unlike any other leggings I have tried, these don’t slip down as you move or dig in at the waist. The reinforced seams give you the confidence to squat, stretch and move.

OWN THE ADVENTURE Eco-Friendly Swim Trunks

£39.99

Ideal for fun open water swims and low-key training sessions. The bright colours attracted a lot of comments, in a good way. They feel well-made and the material is soft and light. Having metal eyelets for the drawstring is a nice touch as we’ve ripped the fabric on many a costume that don’t have these. The style sits in a sort of no-man’s land between jammers or briefs, but we know some people wear them for exactly this reason. We’ve heard a jammers edition is on the way so we’re looking forward to seeing that.

RED Quilted Lightweight Water-Resistant Adventure Blanket

£78.95

This is great as a blanket to sit on, sunbathe on or wrap around you. On the beach, sand slipped off it and on a damp day by the river the waterproof groundsheet kept our bums and kit dry! We loved the loops for pegging out on a windy day and the zipped secret pocket to hide keys away. It also packs up super small and is lightweight to carry.

STREAM2SEA Reef Friendly Mask Defog

£12.95

We’re thrilled that Stream2Sea products are now available in the UK. This mask/goggle defog gel is the best we’ve tried and is also made from safe ingredients that won’t impact outdoor water environments or irritate your eyes. It works, as simple as that. We use it every time we go on a long swim and never need to worry about fog!

OWN THE ADVENTURE Tie-Dye Swimsuit

£54.99

Made from 100% recycled polyester, OTA swimsuits come in a choice of three eye-popping prints – we loved the tie-dye. The suits also have a clever breast check reminder on the inside lining, so not only will you be reminded to check your boobs each time you swim, you’ll also be happy in the knowledge that a portion of your pennies will have gone to a good cause – Breast Cancer UK.

PROTEIN WORKS, Sune

£29.99 (600g)

This plant-based protein shake is formulated specifically for women, with added probiotics, vitamins and minerals specifically designed to support women’s health to maintain hormone balance, cognitive function, energy levels and gut health. Each portion contains 20g of protein and it blends to a lovely thick texture.

TAPPERMADE Seaweed Face Oil

From £11

Having recently switched from body lotion to an oil, we wanted similar for the face. Many lotions and creams contain additional chemicals, which are not water safe or environmentally friendly. This seaweed infused oil was moisturising, but not greasy. It smells fresh and aromatic, glides onto skin well and has become part of our daily skincare routine.

TICKET TO THE MOON Upcycled Mini Backpack

£24.95

We threw this into the suitcase on a recent swim holiday as a ‘just in case’ bag and ended up using it daily. It’s such a great idea, light, small and simple design. It unfolds and was large enough to fit all our swim-kit. Despite its simplicity, it still has a little back pocket for valuables, and adjustable straps. Also great as an extra bag when doing grocery shopping!

VOITED Outdoor Poncho 3.0

£95

We loved this super stylish, yet simple and practical poncho. This is lighter than big, cumbersome changing robes but still offers warmth and protection from the elements. The new waffle lining was perfect for absorbing water without feeling damp and cold underneath. It is lightweight enough to fold into itself, which is ideal for travel and big bonus, it is machine washable!

Whether you’re taking part in an event abroad or touring new lakes and coves, packing for a swim travel trip requires some forethought.

Make a list

We’ve found these items to be essential when packing for our swimming trips:

  • Always pack at least two swimsuits, preferably three. One can dry while you wear another, and a third is always useful. If you’re taking hold luggage, put one in your hand-luggage.
  • Take a spare pair of goggles: your old, reliable go-to pair plus a back up. Consider bringing one with clear lenses and one with tinted or polarised lenses, for different light conditions.
  • A descent-sized cotton hammam style towel will dry quickly, doubles as a blanket and won’t shed microplastics like a microfibre towel.
  • Either a multi-use shoe, something that can be worn in water, on land or to a cafe. Or a lightweight, roll-up water shoe to keep your feet protected at stony exit points.
  • A warm layer. Materials like merino wool and bamboo have a great warmth to weight ratio, and are breathable, too.
  • Environmentally-friendly sunscreen – a must when swimming, even on cloudy days. Mineral based sunscreens and zinc sticks contain less harmful ingredients than chemical sunscreens and are not linked to coral bleaching.

Kit for events

If you’re taking part in an event, check if there is any compulsory kit, such as tow floats or bright swim hats.

Think safety

Design your own mini first aid kit based on where you’ll be swimming. Consider items such as pain relief, plasters, antiseptic wipes, bite creams, friction creams, tick tweezers and hand sanitiser. Pack a couple of bright swim caps for visibility, a whistle and perhaps a small tow float.

Choose a bag carefully

Think about how you’ll be spending your days in and out of the water and choose a bag accordingly. Consider a wet-dry bag, which has waterproof sections for stashing your wet kit. Alternatively, bring a couple a dry bags to keep everything separate. Having a way to fix a damp costume to the outside of your bag is also useful.

Hand luggage only

It’s perfectly possible to go away for a weekend with hand-luggage only, even with a wetsuit, but you have to leave most of your other clothes behind! Bear in mind, though, there might be items that are hard to take through security such as sunscreen, anti-chafing cream and energy gels. If you’re taking a hold bag, pack your swimmers in your hand luggage in case it goes astray.

It’s our favourite cold water swimming mashup where the warmth of a wetsuit meets the freedom and flexibility of swimwear. Rowan Clarke tests out Sumarpo’s fantastic new range of Yulex swimwear – and explains how it can enhance your swimming experience.

A better recovery

It’s always been the hottest outdoor swimming debate – do you wear a wetsuit or not? Wetsuits work by trapping a layer of water against your skin, which warms up to your body temperature, keeping you warmer.

“With a layer of rubber between your skin and the water, some swimmers see wetsuits as diminishing the cold water experience,” says Rowan. “This isn’t true, by the way – you still get the benefits of cold water in a wetsuit, but they are a faff to get on and off, and some swimmers find them uncomfortable.”

Neoprene swimwear, on the other hand, is as easy to put on and take off as a swimsuit. With extra warmth around your core, this makes the most difference to your post-swim recovery. So, neoprene swimwear allows you to enjoy the water for a bit longer and warm up more easily.

Sumarpo’s Yulex swimwear is soft, supple, and flexible, featuring a long zip down the front that makes dressing and undressing super easy, especially in the sleeveless version.

More buoyancy

For distance, speed or endurance front crawl swimmers, wetsuits offer a distinct advantage because they make us more buoyant and streamlined in the water. But not everyone wants to swim further or faster – and not everyone wants to swim front crawl.

“Breaststroke in a full wetsuit is tricky, especially for women because we naturally have more body fat in our legs and bums,” says Rowan. “Wetsuits make my legs too floaty for breaststroke, which is uncomfortable and awkward. So, I love having the option to wear a wetsuit with no legs.”

Being a bit more buoyant can make us feel safer and more comfortable while swimming. Having our legs and arms free for kicking and pulling makes swimming even more comfortable, whichever stroke we enjoy. It’s all about choosing pleasure over performance.

Multi-uses for more fun

The extra warmth and protection you get from Sumarpo’s Yulex swimwear has a variety of uses all year round, from winter dips to summer adventures.

“I love discovering secret coves with my swim group or on my paddleboard, swimming in and out of sea caves and from one beach to the next,” says Rowan. “My Sumarpo is perfect for these summertime adventures and for bodyboarding while my son surfs.”

You get SPF 50+ protection, which is another great reason to choose the long-sleeved swimsuit in particular for sunny days on the water. And if you want to wear it in outdoor pools (or an artificial surf reef), it’s also chlorine resistant.

Rowan wears the Sleeveless Yulex Swimsuit

For eco-conscious swimmers

Yulex is the only truly sustainable option for wetsuits. While the open water swimming market is working on producing Yulex wetsuits, they are still few and far between. We’re delighted that Sumarpo has used Yulex in its new range of swimwear.

Sumarpo’s Yulex swimwear comes in three styles, two long-sleeve and one sleeveless, in UK sizes 6 to 20. We found the sizes to be true to size – we recommend picking your dress size and sizing down if you’re between sizes.

Rowan is 5’11” and a UK size 16/18. She wears the Women’s Yulex Long Sleeve Neoprene Swim Suit (£121) and Women’s Yulex Sleeveless Neoprene Swim Suit (£98) in a size 16.

For a sleek, smoothskin swimsuit, choose the snazzy Siren neoprene swimsuit. This is made of Yamamoto neoprene (so not eco-friendly like Yulex), but its iridescent colourway is wild, and the smoothskin outer means it’s more akin to Sumarpo’s performance wetsuits.

BUDDYSWIM 30L Dry backpack

£60

Pro: Completely waterproof for carrying wet kit
Con: One big compartment increases the rummaging factor

As ardent swim hikers, we love a good backpack made to carry wet and dry kit. We took the BuddySwim 30L Dry Backpack for a day’s coastal hike with sea dips along the way. It’s an ideal size for a couple of swimsuits, a lightweight towel, fleece and water bottle. The adjustable padded straps are comfortable, although a chest strap would have helped to spread the load. There’s also a pad that sits against your back, which is aerated to minimise sweatiness. Made from durable waterproof polyvinyl fabric with welded seams, the backpack feels durable and it’s certainly waterproof; it withstood being dropped on shingle and contained our wet kit with no seepage. The top of the bag is designed to roll up and close securely with nylon buckles and there’s elasticated drawstring, which is great for drying wet gear as you walk. RC

WILD MOOSE Caribou Kit Bag 40L

£60

Pro: Multiple ways to carry the bag
Con: Large capacity better for winter

With a 40L capacity, the sturdy Wild Moose Caribou Kit Bag can carry a whole lot of kit. For a full day’s swimming, I was able to fit my changing robe, towel, tow float, changing mat, swim shoes, multiple swimsuits and a packed lunch comfortably inside. There are multiple ways to carry the bag: grip handles, a shoulder strap and removable backpack straps. Even on a drizzly day, the tough tarpaulin fabric, welded seams and storm flap kept everything dry inside, while the internal easy-to-reach pockets were handy for keeping important bits, like my car keys and wallet, safe and sound. I especially appreciated the large waterproof pocket, with a splash-proof zip, in the top opening lid of the bag, which kept our warm layers nice and dry. This is a new version of the bag, and one updated design feature is an enlarged D-shape, zip opening at the top, which fastens with a splash-proof zip covered by a storm flap. This makes it super easy to access all your gear, while ensuring that most of the water from any rain will be kept out. AW

KATHMANDU Pack&Go Duffle (30L)

£50

Pro: Lightweight & packs down small
Con: Only one compartment

A really handy travel kit bag, which packs down into its own pocket and could easily be stashed in your hand luggage or clipped onto the outside of another bag ready for when you need it. The 30L capacity is really roomy, plenty of space for a wetsuit, towel, costume and snacks. It’s made with tough, recycled nylon (made from waste nylon materials such as post-industrial plastic waste, textile waste, fishing nets and marine debris), and it feels like it will last. There’s an external zipped pocket with a key clip, but it could do with a couple of extra pockets. JT

RED Lightweight Waterproof Crossbody Bag 7L

£39.95

Pro: Small, practical and waterproof
Con: Not for big adventures

This is ideal for smaller adventures and packing light. When the weather is good or you just want a bit of kit on a walk just in case a swim opportunity arises, this is perfect. It can be worn across the body, or around your waist – both comfortable – both great when on a paddleboard, kayak or on foot. I managed to fit a towel, swimsuit, goggles, suncream, mobile phone, keys, drybag and small bottle of water into this compact 7L design. The internal pockets were great for small items and valuables. The external zipped pocket was great for quick access to my phone for snapping photos and checking my map on our walk. There are also handlebar attachments if you travel by bike. It wouldn’t be an obvious choice for a swim-adventure, but if you aren’t going far, or don’t want loads of stuff, it really is ideal. It held up in a heavy rainstorm and I loved all the possibilities with the external bungee system – I clipped my outdoor mug to it! EF

YETI Camino Carryall 35L

£150

Pro: Large main compartment
Con: Doesn’t pack down small when you need to store it

This is one heck of a sturdy bag. We loved the large main compartment, which is ideal for easily rifling through your swimming kit, and the two internal zip pockets. The best part is the two cleverly tucked away dividers that fold out to section off parts of the main compartment – plenty big enough for a rolled up towel or a chunky thermos. A robust base means the bag will withstand rough riverbanks and rocky bays, stay upright and keep water out, while the outer is made from a waterproof, puncture-resistant shell. Then there are the robust carry handles – the reinforced fabric handles plus strong CrossBar™ Handles for when you’re hauling heavy, wet kit. The Yeti Camino Carryall comes in three sizes (20L, 25L and 50L) and 12 limited edition colours. JT

RED Adventure Waterproof Backpack 30L

£114.95

They say: Constructed in highly durable recycled fabric with reliable roll-top closure, it’s totally watertight. Gear stays well protected, with a reinforced base, waterproof and water-resistant external stash pockets, plus removable padded laptop sleeve. Your safety’s boosted too, thanks to reflective detailing and a built-in emergency whistle. With super-comfy foam shoulder straps and breathable, ergonomically padded back panel.

We say: Lots of fully waterproof backpacks are relatively simple and don’t have practical details like easy-access pockets. All the elements of this bag make it an all-round bag for work and play. The side sleeves for bottles are useful and the pockets super for access to phone and keys. The strapping and ties were great to attach walking poles and hang wet kit on while we walked. The bag is quite heavy before anything goes into it, but the brilliant fastening system ensures you can off-set the weight.

SEASHELL Drybag Backpack 25L

£65

They say: A robust 500D PVC coating for unbeatable waterproof protection, ensuring your gear stays dry and secure, no matter the weather. This versatile bag offers ample space to comfortably fit your seashell robe, towel, swimsuit and other essentials, making it the perfect companion for your next adventure. Features a fully waterproof main compartment and water-resistant front pocket.

We say: We were really impressed by this backpack, both in terms of styling and functionality. It has proper back support and padded straps. We also really liked the robust grab handle; the whole construction feels like it will last plus its completely waterproof. It’s roomier than you might imagine for its 25L capacity, with ample space for a robe, towel, swimmers and lunch box, with pockets for water, hot drinks and valuables that need to stay dry.

D-ROBE Roll-Top Bag 35L

£89

They say: Perfectly crafted for travel, this rucksack is designed with the commuter in mind. Made from durable, waterproof, recyclable and biodegradable TPU, this bag can be worn rolled for extra water protection or unrolled for extra storage. Stylish enough for navigating the city, heavy-duty enough to haul around nature, and spacious enough to fit a weekend’s worth of luggage or one of our signature Beaufort Robes.

We say: We packed our entire luggage for an overseas weekend swimming trip into the D-Robe Roll-Top and there was no issue taking it onto the plane as hand-luggage. The side valve allows you to compress the bag once it’s packed. We also wore the bag for a 4-hour hike. The outside pocket will hold snacks or your keys, but a mesh pocket for a drinks bottle would be a useful addition. Inside, a deep pouch will hold a large book. There’s also another smaller zip-up pouch for small items. A surprising amount of stuff can fit in the depths of this bag!

WILD MOOSE Caribou Waterproof Backpack 45L

£65

They say: Fully waterproof, roll top, wet/dry rucksack designed for wild swimmers. It will keep your kit dry, has tons of storage space, is fully adjustable for comfortable wearing and has an array of features to facilitate carrying your gear to your favourite swim spots. It is made from tough 500D tarpaulin and has heat welded seams for total protection from the elements.

We say: With a 45L storage capacity, this bag is extremely roomy with ample space for a changing robe, towel, wetsuit and any other kit you might need on a day out. A wide opening makes it easy to stuff in all your kit. Its stand-out element is a separate waterproof bag that zips into the main compartment, meaning you can keep your wet and dry clothes separate and easily remove it once home, plus a transparent showerproof pocket so you can find your keys and phone easily. The roll-top style keeps the bag watertight, but means you can also keep rolling to create a more compact bag.

ZONE3 Open Water Dry Bag Tech Backpack 30L

£89

They say: 100% waterproof welded seams and folding seal so suitable for keeping things dry whilst you’re swimming and then for putting wet swimwear or wetsuits in post-swim. Featuring a front mesh pocket for all your essentials with quick release cord closures, elasticated side pockets for drinks and a lightweight, breathable back panel and shoulder straps.

We say: We took this waterproof bag on a weekend swimming trip and it performed brilliantly. It was roomy enough to fit dry clothing, swim kit and a packed lunch. There’s also exterior pockets for a flask and water bottle, and a front pouch for a notebook and snacks, all within easy reach. Despite being packed full, the weight was distributed evenly across our shoulders because of the chest strap, so it felt comfortable to carry for long durations. It was a very rainy weekend but our stuff stayed perfectly dry inside!

DRYROBE Compression Backpack

£95

They say: This lightweight and weatherproof daypack can also compress a dryrobe changing robe, helping you to experience more of the great outdoors. This versatile backpack features both a laptop sleeve and quick access media pocket, making it perfect day-to-day use and city exploration. Made with 100% recycled fabrics.

We say: A smart rucksack that is perfect for everyday use, but also big enough to carry a changing robe. Simply stuff your robe into the bag and then compress it using six straps on the side of the bag. We liked the lightweight, weatherproof material and the understated styling. Padded straps, chest strap and breathable, padded back were comfortable. An internal sleeve with Velcro strap keeps your laptop secure and there is also an external zipped pocket. We liked the satchel-style buckles but found the straps fiddly to adjust.

PATAGONIA Black Hole® Pack 25L Classic Navy

£119.90

They say: A burly 25-litre daypack with just the right amount of space to haul your daily essentials, with the durability you expect from our Black Hole® bags. Made with 100% recycled body fabric, lining and webbing. Light and strong recycled polyester ripstop with a highly weather-resistant TPU-film laminate. Featuring an air mesh back panel for comfort and increased ventilation.

We say: The clever design of this backpack means it can withstand big adventures, while being smart enough for day-to-day activities. There are multiple storage options in addition to the main compartment, including a zippered top pocket, front stash pocket and stretch water-bottle section, allowing for a multitude of uses. It is incredibly comfortable to wear and it looks great.

FINISTERRE Drift Waterproof Roll Top Backpack

£185

They say: Made from 100% recycled heavy duty polyester material, our Drift Backpack is fully waterproof with welded seams and a whole host of technical features to help get you out on your adventures – no matter where they take you. Tough and durable, with an IP64 rating and high frequency welded seams, plus roll top construction.

We say: A bag expertly designed for big adventures, with an excellent quality and fit to match its size. The material of the backpack feels extremely durable. The design means you can wash out dirt that may accumulate on long journeys, and it should withstand scrapes and bumps that may occur. Overall, a great bag, but would be made even better with the addition of an internal zip!

AQUAPAC 28L Heavyweight Waterproof IPX

£65

They say: This is from our TrailProof range. It’s designed to waterproof your gear for rugged adventures but be simple and affordable. Brilliant for paddling, biking, vacation and extreme sports. Tough 500D Vinyl will resist scrapes and abrasion on the trail. Mesh side pockets for drinks or quick-access items. Breathable mesh straps and padding.

We say: For the price point, it’s a fantastic backpack. The tough, waterproof material allows for ease of mind when travelling across various terrains and entering water. I tested out the acid green backpack, which also enables greater visibility when travelling in the dark. Feeling slightly bulkier than others on the list, this is probably more suited for shorter, swim-specific trips.

OSPREY Transporter Waterproof 30L

£180

They say: Built to get you from point A to B and handle any conditions that come your way. Waterproof, lightweight, reliable packs that offer comfortable carry and simple organisation for the day ahead. With an IPX6 waterproof rating, when rolled this pack is the perfect companion for every active user.

We say: We loved this, and used it on a city swimming trip. It was a great flight carry-on bag, You can get a lot in it. It was super light when empty, and wasn’t heavy once full. The outer secret pocket was great for phone and passport, while inside the zipped smaller pocket was great for wallet. Threw it into the lake to see how good it was at keeping things dry inside and it passed the test! The roll top is stiff to begin with but softens with use.

ULU AquaTrek® 36 Waterproof backpack

£159.99

They say: This backpack has been designed to give you the freedom to explore and flow across land and water. Packed with all the essential features for safety on land and in the water, this inflatable backpack is unique! With a zipped top style opening, removable back panel and harness, external compression straps and a tow system, it provides a quick and easy way to explore.

We say: This is a serious piece of kit and worth the price tag. Designed and built for proper adventure, it is big and so you could get a weekend’s worth of kit in it and still tow it from A-B. It is also bright, so you will not be missed in the water. As a decent size floating bag, this was brilliant. If you wanted to go on a swim-camping weekend or swim along a coastline, this would be perfect. This is worth it if you love a weekend adventure.

CHROME Ruckas Tote

£100

They say: This roomy hybrid bag has been cleverly designed to be worn either as a backpack or a traditional tote, with convertible shoulder straps. Light not only on weight, but also on the planet, the Ruckas Tote is PFC free and has been consciously constructed with weather resistant and recycled scratch resistant outer shells. Designed to transport your tech safely and securely, inside the spacious main compartment you’ll also find a padded laptop sleeve designed to hold devices of up to 15”. All packs in the Ruckas family feature a handy webbed hanging/grab loop to the top and wide, adjustable straps to allow for all day carrying comfort and great weight distribution when loaded.

We say: We loved this robust, versatile and lightweight bag, which converts easily between a rucksack and tote bag. For its 0.5kg weight, it has a generous 27L capacity, which is ample room for a quick-dry towel, swimsuit and goggles. On the outside, it has two expandable pockets for drinks and an external stash pocket for goggles or snacks, while inside there’s a 15″ padded laptop sleeve and various internal pockets. The recycled material feels hard-wearing and is water-resistant. While it doesn’t have the back support of some larger adventure bags, we think it’s ideal for post-work swims and those who prefer minimal kit.

A super flexible suit for breaststroke swimmers, a thermal suit for the coldest of temperatures and the first colourful open water swimming wetsuit: read on for our guide to the latest wetsuits

ORCA Vitalis Breast Stroke Women Openwater Wetsuit

£199

Pro: Excellent flexibility
Con: It isn’t the warmest wetsuit

This is Orca’s first wetsuit designed for breaststroke swimming, made with high elasticity and low buoyancy to maintain a natural swimming position. The distribution of Yamamoto neoprene means that your legs don’t lift excessively, which puts less pressure on your lower back, while the high elasticity means the suit adapts to the movement of your upper body, as well as making it super easy to take off. The buoyancy feels noticeably different to a standard suit and allowed me to move with ease. Bear in mind, it’s also thinner than most wetsuits, which means it’s not as warm. I tested it in a 10-degree lake, and I spent less time in the water than I would have done with a thicker suit. That said, it should be plenty warm enough for spring to autumn swimming. JT

TYPHOON Performance
3/2mm Full Wetsuit

£199

Pro: High neckline for protection against the elements
Con: Can feel the seams around the knee area

I tried this wetsuit during a lake swim, doing both front crawl and breast stroke. It works best for front crawl thanks to the stretchiness in the underarms and buoyancy in the legs. The plush lining in the chest and back area kept my core warm, and I was thankful for the higher than usual neckline, as my neck tends to suffer most in cold water. The wetsuit is well built with quality seams and structuring that I’m sure will withstand a lot of wear, but I could feel the seams of the knee panels after a while and wondered if they would irritate during a longer swim. The legs of the suit also feel a bit baggy around the calves when getting out of the water, which is a strange sensation perhaps not conducive to a swim-run or triathlon. All in all, these are just a couple of minor flaws that don’t take too much away from it being a high-quality wetsuit. AW

ZOGGS Explorer Ultra FS Open Water Wetsuit

£350

Pro: Excellent buoyancy
Con: Slim fit arms

The Explorer Ultra FS is made with Yamamoto 38 neoprene, which is known for its flexibility, buoyancy and durability. Three different thicknesses ranging from 1.5mm to 2.5mm provide an optimal balance of flexibility and support a hydrodynamic body position in the water. It was easy to put on, and I felt well supported and fast in the water. The material was also warm, with little water ingress, and the double face neoprene in the armpits and inner legs feels like it will be durable. The fit wasn’t ideal for me – while it fit like a glove on the legs and lower body, it was too slim in the sleeves. However, you can customise the arms to the desired cuff length, which would fix this issue and allow for a bespoke fit. Overall, I was very impressed and excited to try it out over longer distance swims. SO

ORCA Zeal Thermal Open Water Wetsuit

£449

Pro: Warmest wetsuit on test
Con: Takes time to get on

This wetsuit is perfectly designed for colder temperatures with its thermal lining and 5mm panels that provide extra insulation. The extra layer of the “batwing” hood is another clever aspect of the suit, preventing water entering the zipper area. When accessorised with a neoprene hood, gloves and booties, I was able to do some swim training outdoors during autumn and winter, and I was amazed by how flexible and lightweight the wetsuit felt, considering the thickness of the neoprene. As with any Yamamoto neoprene suit, it can be time-consuming and delicate to put on, but the protective gloves provided certainly help with this. This wetsuit is a game changer when it comes to winter swimming. AW

WILDA The Dart

£265

While most open water wetsuits are muted blacks and greys, Wilda has created a suit that embraces the joy, vibrancy and individuality of open water swimming without compromising on function, buoyancy and warmth. It’s made with Yamamoto limestone neoprene, a material known for its exceptional flexibility and durability, and better carbon footprint compared to petroleum-based neoprene.
The neoprene is soft and supple and feels fantastic. Once in the water, the targeted buoyancy allowed for a natural swimming position, which worked well for both breaststroke and front crawl.
The distribution of materials has been well thought out, too. The chest panel features 4mm neoprene to increase buoyancy and support the upper body for a comfortable breaststroke position, while the back and legs are 3mm, which allows for a slightly reduced buoyancy in the legs, suited to the female physique. JT

ZONE3 Active Flex

£189

Superb flexibility
Con: None

I tested this wetsuit on a windy day paddleboarding and swimming in the river. There’s a superb amount of flexibility in the shoulders for the stroke movement of SUP, and the knee panels provided great support and cushioning while on my knees on the board. Breaststroke swimming felt smooth and balanced, and I was easily spotted from the riverbank thanks to the orange highlights and zip toggle. There was a chilly breeze and the water was cold but the wetsuit provided ample insulation for the few hours I wore it. And it was a doddle to put on and take off, too – a godsend for frequent wetsuit wearers! This is a cleverly designed all-rounder wetsuit for a day’s adventuring on the water. AW

LOMO Nuotare 3/2mm Men’s Swimming Wetsuit

£125

Super easy to get on and off
Con: Not great for speed

Lomo introduced the women’s Nuotare a couple of seasons ago and it was so popular with recreational swimmers that they’ve now introduced a men’s equivalent. It’s a great entry-level suit with an attractive price tag, and a simple and durable design. It is made from a stretchy, double-lined neoprene, which means it is more robust and very easy to get on and off. However, if you’re chasing speed, this suit probably isn’t for you. I am 5ft 9, 100kg and have a 38-inch waist and this suit was super roomy, I would recommend sizing down if you look at the size chart. As a fair-weather swimmer who often does short swims and dips, this is ideal for cooler water temperatures or cooler weather. BT

ZONE3 Aspire

£549

Pro: Solid high-performance wetsuit for racing or long-distance challenges
Con: Not suitable for extreme cold

The Zone3 Aspire is lightweight, smooth on the outside and soft on the inside. It went on easily for a snug but non-constricting fit. It feels like a quality suit. I had a slight concern that the collar was too wide and might let in water around the neck but this didn’t happen and it was comfortable while swimming. In the water, the suit is balanced and fast, as a high-performance wetsuit should be. Flexibility around the shoulders is excellent and water ingress minimal. I’m looking forward to trialling this in a race. One small trade-off to be aware of: in 12.7-degree water, I started to feel the chill after 10 to 15 minutes. This wouldn’t be a problem in shorter races, but I’d be more comfortable with an additional layer or a thicker suit for longer recreational swims. SG

HUUB Araya

£279

Surprisingly roomy for rounder bodies
Con: Takes a few uses to shape to your body

Looking at the brand’s size chart, I wasn’t sure HUUB wetsuits were for me. But after chatting to the team and trying a couple of suits, I was pleased to find the Araya comfortable, snug in all the right ways and brilliant in the water. It features a flexible neoprene and HUUB neutral arm positioning design, which for someone who likes to swim skins, was a welcome feature allowing for a great freedom of movement. I often tire quicker in a wetsuit, feeling restricted across chest and shoulders, but this excellent value suit felt great to swim in and didn’t impact my stroke. It does have significant buoyancy, which means I felt like I was skimming across the surface at times, but if you need that, it is great! EF

ORCA Zeal Hi-Vis

£379

They say: The Zeal Hi-Vis combines visibility, buoyancy and elasticity. It’s the ideal wetsuit for open water swimmers who face the harshest conditions. The arms, legs and back feature high-visibility orange for safety. The buoyancy of Aerodome 2 technology will keep you feeling safe on your open water adventures. For increased thermal comfort and better sealing, a second layer of “batwing” neoprene is included, which prevents water from entering the suit’s zipper and neck area.

We say: The bright orange sleeves, calves and back are certainly easier to see in the water than the darker colours you traditionally find on wetsuits. The suit is comfortable to swim in and kept us warm in 10 degree water. The ‘batwing’ layer is a clever addition. It extends the full length of your back and prevents the unpleasant feeling of cold water seeping in through the zip. It also loops around your neck, reducing water ingress. If you are sensitive to having tight things around your neck, you may find this uncomfortable.

ZONE3 Terraprene Vision

£399

They say: The first wetsuit of its kind, the Terraprene Vision features a ground breaking new fully biodegradable rubber. X-10 one-piece shoulder panel design extends across the chest and shoulders to give more flexibility and stroke efficiency. Body rotation enhancement panel on the front helps maximise distance per stroke and body roll during the swim. The ultra-stretch material allows for a maximum range of motion.

We say: This suit fit like a glove and was so easy to take off. Even in 8 degree water, it kept us warm with a snug collar that lies flat to prevent water ingress. The ultra-stretch material allows for a fantastic range of motion while well placed neoprene panels of varying thickness provide buoyancy and warmth such as 1.5mm panels over the shoulders for max range of motion. The men’s suit has 5mm buoyancy panels on the torso and front legs to promote a flat and streamlined front crawl position.

ZOGGS Explorer Tour FS Open Water

£180

They say: Designed for swimmers taking the first step on their open water journey. Double face neoprene makes this suit both durable and comfortable, ideal for swimmers new to wearing a wetsuit. The swim specific design provides high-level elasticity and a perfect fit. Stitch-free critical areas allow you to swim without hindrance. Customisable cuff length allows you to customise the legs and arms of your wetsuit to your desired cuff length.

We say: We love the style of this entry-level wetsuit, with its fluorescent yellow highlights and contour print – great for being seen in the water! Our 5’8” tester found the suit a little short in the body but once in the water the flexible material loosened up and provided full range of movement. The majority of the suit is 2mm neoprene with a 3mm core panel and it felt remarkably warm in 8 degree water with almost zero water ingress, even around the zips.

ZONE3 Aspect ‘Breaststroke’ Suit

£179

They say: The Aspect wetsuit has been updated with Pro-Speed wrist cuffs for easy removal, sleeker graphics and an improved construction for a longer lasting wetsuit. However, the premise is the same. The revolutionary Aspect wetsuit allows open water swimmers to swim both breaststroke and front crawl in comfort.

We say: Although you can swim any stroke, the combination of 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm neoprene thickness helps keep the legs submerged in the water to promote a natural breaststroke swimming position, reducing pressure on the lower back. Our tester has been trying to improve their breaststroke and the wetsuit certainly helped, letting them focus on improving their form, the high stretch nylon inner leg panels allowing flexibility in the leg kick. Changing after a dip was easy due to the ‘Pro-Speed’ wrist cuffs. Available in men’s and women’s.

ZOGGS Hypex Ultra FS Triathlon

£700

They say: Hypex Ultra FS is Zoggs’ top-of-the-line wetsuit for triathletes who desire unrivalled flexibility for superior freedom of movement during their swim. Hypex Ultra FS combines extreme flexibility with a neutral buoyancy profile to unlock the ultimate unrestricted, natural swim feeling. The HYPEX construction utilises careful panel architecture to increase the neoprene elongation and stability with no compromise to the stretch. This allows for enhanced flexibility.

We say: Not just for triathletes! If you’re looking for a fast, comfortable swim this is the suit to choose. It’s supple, lightweight and a pleasure to swim in. The reverse zip makes it easier to remove the suit in a hurry – something that you don’t need in a swimming race – but we found the zip more comfortable for swimming as the fastener sits above the small of your back rather than behind your neck; it’s also less likely to come undone. However, it’s almost impossible to zip up alone.

YONDA Ghost 3

£589

They say: The Ghost 3 is designed to deliver dynamic flexibility and in water ‘feel’ that will give you the ultimate swim experience. Handcrafted tailoring for quality, comfort, durability, and strength with lightning-fast transitions thanks to our unique easy off “slippy” lining. Yonda have designed the ultimate performance wetsuit that optimises your body position and works with you, delivering an unparalleled feeling as you cut through the water.

We say: The Yonda Ghost 2 was a favourite for long distance swims and racing, so we were excited to try the next iteration. The Ghost 3 retains the best features such as the lightweight fabric forearm panels, while the new suit feels more flexible and supple. Swimming feels natural and fast. Our only warning is the forearm panels: while we recognise their benefit, the minimal protection is noticeable in very cold water.

Aquasphere Phantom V3

£439.99

They say: The Aquasphere Phantom wetsuit provides an increased range of motion with strategically placed 1.5mm Yamamoto 40 panels and reinforced waist panels for posture support. It provides warmth, flexibility, comfort and speed. This is our most technological advanced wetsuit for the most elite athletes. Extra support on the waist improves posture and enhances hip rotation and Thermo-Guard technology on chest, shoulders and legs helps retain body heat.

We say: The stand-out feature of this racing wetsuit is the double layer collar, which feels smooth around the neck, close fitting but not constricting. It does a good job of keeping water out, too. Overall, this suit is soft and supple, and comfortable to wear, while the core support around the lower back adds noticeable rigidity in a key place and made it feel stable. We needed assistance with the reverse zip but once on, it’s snug and secure. It’s as flexible and fast as you’d expect.

YONDA Spectre

£389

They say: This wetsuit incorporates exceptional build quality, flexibility and speed at an affordable price point. The advanced design and handcrafted quality build deliver extra strength and durability; comfort with all key seams taped and lightning fast to take off. The Spectre is aimed at first timers to triathlon and open water swimmers who are looking for a high quality, but affordable first wetsuit. If your mission is to kick ass at an affordable price this is your suit!

We say: Honestly, we didn’t hold out much hope for this suit to fit our plus size swimmer. Sizing for bigger bodies is a challenge and even if a suit fits, the buoyancy panels can work a little too well for an already buoyant body. The Yonda Spectre was a dream-fit and great to swim in! We loved the thinner neoprene on the arms for flexibility without impacting arm rotation. The paneling is well thought out, providing lift and support without restriction across the chest. A great investment.

LOMO Nuotare

£125

They say: The Nuotare is a revolution in ladies swimming wetsuits. Most swimming wetsuits are versions of smooth skin triathlon wetsuits where the objective is to shave every last second off your race time. This makes the suits slightly faster than regular wetsuits but also makes them more fragile and easily ripped. The Nuotare takes all the design and shape features from our triathlon wetsuits but combines them with a super stretch material that has super stretch nylon on the outside instead of smooth skin finish. This makes the suit more durable, but also more stretchy making it easier to get on.

We say: We love this suit for its ease to get on and off as well as its multi-use. While the design has considered the needs of open water swimmers, it has been made for those who wish to enjoy the water without the need to win prizes for speed. This would suit swimmers who want the thermal benefits of a wetsuit without the need for technical details. The size-inclusive range ensures that pretty much anyone can wear the suit. The durable material held up well on a wild swim which included a bumpy section of rocks and a climb in and out of the water.

BLUE SEVENTY Reaction

£480

They say: Our all time best selling suit gets the upgrades needed to keep it at the top of its category. The paneling in the upper body of the 2024 Reaction has been redesigned to encourage more natural rotation and increase distance per stroke. These features, combined with the refined fit on the arms, create a suit that delivers everything you need for training and racing.

We say: The updated Reaction suit has had more than a cosmetic facelift. This premium suit has 1.5mm neoprene on the arms, shoulders and side panels, allowing unrestricted arm movement and easier rotation. Buoyant 5mm neoprene on the chest and hips encourages a streamlined position. The neckline is relatively high but seemed comfortable and didn’t allow water ingress. This is a wetsuit designed for frontcrawl swimmers who enjoy racing and training but also need a suit with greater durability than elite-level wetsuits.

ALPKIT Element Jacket and Pants

£99.99 (jacket), £99.99 (pants)

They say: The Element is Alpkit’s new two-piece wetsuit with four variations on offer. Both vest and long sleeve on the top with shorts or full-length bottoms on offer for the legs. With Paddleboarding growing and more people wanting to explore by water, the Element was born. The front zip on the tops makes getting in and out of them easier so you spend less time struggling to change at the water’s edge.

We say: This was my first time trying a two-piece wetsuit, and it didn’t disappoint. I particularly liked the high cut at the bottom, helping to keep full coverage. It’s ideal for those who want to reduce the faff that often comes with taking a wetsuit on and off. There is slightly more water ingress than there would be in a one-piece suit, making it more suited for those going for more leisurely swims or getting involved in open water activities.

ORCA Vitalis Thermal Wetsuit

£369

They say: The Vitalis Thermal is a thermally insulated wetsuit for open water swimmers. It combines specific technologies for heat retention such as Thermal X technology and sealing technologies such as a second layer of “batwing” neoprene, which prevents water from entering the zipper and neck area. The high-thickness panels give the swimmer excellent buoyancy which helps them conserve energy during cold weather sessions.

We say: This is a seriously warm wetsuit, which surprisingly retains a lot of flexibility and ease of movement despite the additional insulation. I was impressed by the design; there was little water ingress throughout my swim. I would recommend this for the coldest months, allowing training in open water and longer distance swims to remain a possibility.

FINISTERRE Nieuwland 3/2 Yulex Back Zip Wetsuit

£250

They say: Our first back zip wetsuit designed to be easier to get in and out of. Yulex® Pure natural rubber 3mm suit for 14-18℃ sea temperatures with 2mm panels on the arms and legs for easy entry. Featuring double needle blind stitch construction, high chest pile and recycled polyester fabrics.

We say: This wetsuit gave a snug and comfortable fit. With a maximum thickness of 3mm, this is more suited to warmer months, or for those who want to maintain a natural body position in the water as far as possible. I particularly love how it’s made from Yulex® natural rubber, which produces up to 80% less Co2 than traditional neoprene.

SPEEDO Proton Fullsuit

£140

They say: Flexibility for light speed. For speed in the water and the transition out of it, the Proton range uses light, flexible, hydrophobic materials, suitable for strong swimmers looking for an extra edge on their performance. The Fastskin Proton Wetsuit has been developed with Y38 (Yamamoto 38 cell neoprene rubber) – a well-balanced foam providing high buoyancy and flexibility that makes it the most versatile neoprene available – to make sure it performs when it counts.

We say: This suit retails at a reasonable price, making it ideal for those new to outdoor swimming and looking to dip a toe in. The suit itself is exceptionally light and flexible, making it both easy to be transported around and taken on and off. There was some water ingress in the neck area when swimming, however.

HUUB Aegis X

£399

They say: Every sporting goods company has a product that is too good to replace and delivers in so many ways that it’s earned a legacy in their lineup. For HUUB, Aegis is the product that’s always been there, that’s always delivered amazing performance, amazing feedback, and incredible value. Aegis X incorporates tried and tested technologies along with scientific research that ensures your swimming performance and enjoyment.

We say: This wetsuit is at a slightly higher price point, but the design and quality feel make it worth it. This wetsuit allows for robust performance in the water, particularly with the flexibility in the upper body. I felt very little strain when swimming front crawl, and little impact on my stroke form and body position. A really solid choice.

ZONE3 OWS Ti+ Long Sleeve Thermal Costume

£85

Pro: Machine washable
Con: Bust support is a bit lacking

Wetsuits work by trapping a thin layer of water between your skin and the neoprene, which warms up to your skin temperature. But not everyone feels comfortable swimming in a wetsuit. The Zone3 OWS Ti+ offers a great alternative, taking advantage of new titanium-infused fabrics that are self-cleaning, UV protective and insulating. The extra protection from heat loss made a real difference in cold water; I stayed warmer for longer and recovered better after a sea swim. (Rowan Clarke)

LOMO Neoprene Open Water Swimming Swimsuit

£69.99

Pro: Great price
Con: V-neck zip front does allow water to flush

This is a great, simple suit that’s affordable and easy to swim in. It’s perfect for paddle sports as well as swimming. At 3mm, it’s thicker than similar suits but the stretch in the design means it’s still flexible to swim in as well as keeping you a bit warmer. It is ideal for breezy, cooler days and will be useful for longer swims in winter. The soft, high neckline didn’t chafe, but the V-neck shape did allow water to flush at times. The bum coverage allows for efficient kick-movement. (Ella Foote)

ALPKIT Straven Yulex

£99.99

Pro: Quick to dry
Con: Bit roomy in the arms

This insulated shorty is part of a new Yulex range at Alpkit. It is designed to sit between a swimsuit and a wetsuit, giving you more time in the water without the need for a full wetsuit. The Yulex is 2.5mm, but feels warmer and is lovely to swim in. The sizing is generous, so perhaps size down or if you are longer in the body. The back zip is easy to use solo and the panels give ease of movement in the water. The sustainability credentials are also brilliant. (Ella Foote)

YONDA X WILD SWIM STORE, The LongSleeve Swimsuit

£189

Pro: Amazing size range
Con: Zip tough to pull first few swims

For years, I’ve longed for a hybrid wetsuit. Something thicker, warmer, long-sleeved and yet in a swimsuit design. I’m really buoyant in the water, so I don’t need the buoyancy wetsuits are designed to offer. This suit solves the buoyant leg issue, while ticking the boxes on everything else I have wanted. The Yamamoto neoprene is comfortable and warm, while the high neckline prevents drag and water flushing. I swam for an hour in 12ºC water. It’s generous and stretchy, so you might need to size-down. (Ella Foote)

ALPKIT Duel Wetsuit

£149.99

They say: This fast changing, front zip shorty suit makes changing a doddle. The Duel uses panels of varying thicknesses to combine the flexibility and insulation you need. We’ve used 2mm neoprene in the upper body and 3mm around your legs and bum to provide the right amount of buoyancy for an efficient swimming position whether breaststroke or crawl. Nylon-faced neoprene on the arms, inner legs and glutes reduces wear and tear in high friction areas and is durable for sliding in and out of the water.

We say: We think swimrun wetsuits are a great choice for wild swimming if you want the warmth of neoprene around your core without the coverage of a full suit. The Duel’s 2mm and 3mm body panels give warmth and buoyancy while maintaining a natural body position. The long front zip makes the suit easy to remove and the nylon panels on the arms and legs make the suit durable. There’s also a handy zipped pocket on the back and an internal chest pocket for your car keys.

VIVIDA Linda Reversible Wetsuit

£185

They say: Made for swimming and surfing, the reversible shortie Linda Wetsuit is the perfect match for year-round water adventures. The Linda Wetsuit’s flexible, sustainable 2mm neoprene offers the ideal mix of insulation, ease of movement, elegance and connection with nature. The unique fully reversible design gives you two suits in one.

We say: We tried this out in 12 degree water and it kept our tester remarkably warm. We put this down to the snug fit and high elastane content, which meant it stayed put, alongside other well-designed features such as a secure collar seal and medium leg rise with stay-put binding, all contributing to minimising water ingress. The suit now features a longer front zip, which makes changing very smooth and easy. We love the ‘Map of Dreams’ design, with a subtle two tone grey on the reverse.

FINISTERRE Women’s Nieuwland 2e Yulex
Long Jane

£155

They say: Enjoy the elements while adding a layer of warmth with the Nieuwland 2e Yulex Long Jane Swimsuit. Allowing skin to get salty but keeping heat in, the Long Jane is made for summer surfs, spring SUPs and all year round swims. This flexible wetsuit made from Yulex is a cleaner alternative to neoprene, and the racer back and ergonomic panels allows for a full comfortable range of movement.

We say: We love a Long Jane. Traditionally worn by surfers, they’re a great option for shoulder season swims, keeping your core warm while the racer back allows your arms to move freely. There’s something about the way you can feel the water more, too, which makes us feel more present. The Yulex is soft and stretchy and we liked the high rise collar which provides a secure seal. It’s easy to take on and off, lightweight to pack and gives you the option to layer with a Yulex long sleeve jacket in colder conditions.

YONDA Diddy

£150

They say: At Yonda we are extremely passionate about sustainability therefore we have developed a product that aligns with our ethos: this is our new Yulex range. Yulex is 100% pure natural rubber latex and 100% recycled polyester lining with 99% of impurities removed. Our Yulex range has a great variety of cuts to maximise comfort for every shape and size and to help people gain confidence. With front zip or back zip options and an embossed Yonda logo.

We say: We’re excited about Yonda’s new Yulex range, which comprises 12 women’s and four men’s styles in sizes up to 4XL with a variety of cuts from sleeveless, short or long sleeves or bikini cut, with hot pants or varying short lengths. We opted for the long-sleeve, long-short and back-zip ‘Diddy’ in a deep bottle green, which felt remarkably warm for its 2mm thickness. The high fitted neck prevented water ingress while the super stretchy Yulex and thoughtful placement of side seems gave excellent arm rotation without chafing.

ORCA Vitalis Shorty

£149

They say: The Vitalis Shorty is a wetsuit with short sleeves and short legs which was designed for swimming and is also suitable for other water sports. Its orange Hi-Vis panels give you extra visibility for practicing open water swimming. The highly resistant outer fabric in the leg area makes it more durable, while its construction allows for total freedom of movement and makes the wetsuit easy to put on and take off.

We say: The orange side flashes give good visibility in the water and the neck line was very comfortable without letting in water. The nylon legs make the suit not only durable but also suitable for swimming both breaststroke and front crawl as neutral buoyancy is preserved. We also like that it can be used for other water sports such as paddleboarding. It’s a great choice for wild swimming when the water is still chilly but you would like to swim for longer while still feeling a connection with the water. Short arms and legs make the suit very easy to get into and out of.

CHILLY SWIM Audrey the Shortie

£179.99

They say: Audrey is inspired by 1940s swimwear and the panache of Audrey Hepburn. Functional but stylish, this swimsuit gives you maximum body coverage while still keeping the shoulders exposed. The high neckline keeps your chest and collar bones covered (an area particularly susceptible to the cold), while the shorts keep the bum and thighs wrapped up and cosy for that little bit of extra warmth. It has rough cut edges to add a modern, dynamic twist.

We say: What a super silhouette! We were really taken by the shape of the Audrey with its hot-pant shorts, high neck and sleeveless cut, which made our size 16 tester feel really body confident. We also appreciated the balance of style and function: all the important places are covered, with 2mm durable limestone neoprene for core warmth while the 10 per cent ultra-flex Lycra lining gives excellent flexibility and feels silky soft against the skin. The full back zip, with long, pink zip chord, made getting in and out of the suit a breeze.

WALLIEN Nikki van Dijk Springsuit

£189

They say: You’re in for the perfect ride with this award winning 1mm neoprene Springsuit. Co-designed by Madeleine Wallien and our favourite Aussie pro-surfer, Nikki Van Dijk. It’s stylish swimwear cut fits to form, without cutting or disappearing up your behind. We serve it up in our limited edition Sun colour that is accented with white logos and aquamarine binding on the neck, zipper and legs.

We say: Made with 1mm limestone neoprene, this bright springsuit is ideal for water temperatures around 18-22 degrees and we look forward to wearing it for ocean dips and unheated lidos over the summer. We love the retro styling and unusual colours; we tested ‘Sun’, a fresh lemon yellow, but there’s also an aquamarine and warm grey ‘Moon’. The 1mm neoprene is so stretchy, giving exceptional range of movement while being easy to wriggle out of. Made with surfers in mind, this is a robust and ocean-ready suit with reinforced seams and stretch points, so it should last.

How to rinse, wash, repair and store your wetsuit so that it lasts for many seasons to come

A wetsuit is a real investment, probably the most expensive piece of swimming kit you will buy. Careful and meticulous maintenance will keep it smelling fresh and help your wetsuit last longer.

What to do after your swim

Saltwater, chlorine, sand, dirt and environmental toxins will slowly degrade wetsuit material, reducing the suit’s resilience over time. After you’ve finished your swim, always rinse your wetsuit thoroughly with cool fresh water, both inside and out. Close any Velcro fastenings (including on your gloves and booties) before packing your suit away in your kit bag to avoid scratching the delicate material.

Drying your wetsuit

Once home, hang up your wetsuit, ideally doubled over by the waist so the water-heavy suit doesn’t stretch at the neck or shoulders. Invest in a sturdy hanger, like C-Monsta Wetsuit Hanger, which will hold your suit and all of your neoprene accessories. Avoid drying your wetsuit in the sun, but outside in the shade is fine. Once the outside is dry, turn the wetsuit inside out so it can dry on the inside, too.

How to wash

Even if you’re meticulous with your after-swim routine, once in a while your wetsuit could do with a freshen up. Washing your wetsuit prevents neoprene degradation. Salt and chlorine deteriorate over time, meaning your suit might crack or tear; gently washing away these chemicals will extend a wetsuit’s life. It will also eliminate odours, remove sand and dirt and prevent mold and mildew. To wash your wetsuit, use an specialist eco-friendly wetsuit wash. Don’t use the washing machine, mix the solution in a large bucket or tub and follow the instructions, which usually suggest soaking the wetsuit for around half an hour. Thoroughly rinse it, then allow to dry.

How to store

Store your wetsuit (the right way out) in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. Hang it on a sturdy wide-shouldered hanger or doubled over a trouser hanger at the waist. If you’re putting a wetsuit away for the season, it’s better to hang it rather than to fold it up in a cupboard. Most importantly, make sure it is 100% dry before storing it. Also, give it a good once over to look for tears and scratches. Small tears can be repaired at home with neoprene adhesive; larger tears might need professional wetsuit repair service.
